Team Finland: essay and video

Charity in Finland

"If we live in a world where everyone only cares about themselves, then it would be a cruel and selfish world. That is not the world that I want to live in." -Timothy Lam

Charity means, the voluntary giving of help to those who need it. The word "charity" originates from the Greek word Αγάπη (agape) which means an unconditional love for others. Charity is to give happiness to other living beings, humans or animals. When you give happiness to others you will get happiness in return.

Different forms of charities are donations, like money, clothes or food. You can also work as a volunteer in some groups. The organizations are developed in their own areas of expertise.

"We can't help everyone, but everyone can help someone." -Dr. Loretta Scott

We have few examples of Finnish charity organizations:

Mannerheim League for Child Welfare is a Finnish voluntary and charity organization. The organization aims to ensure that every child is entitled to a good and happy childhood. The Mannerheim League is the largest child welfare organization in Finland. They organize events for families. They have a help phone where you can call if you need support or advise in your life.

HESY co.  aims to protect all animals to the best of their abilities. They focus on aiding the homeless animals and increasing the appreciation of animals. They give advice on animal protection and animal care.

We have here in Porvoo a Christian organization called Samaria. Samaria helps people who are suffering from drug or alcohol addiction. They support them and their families, giving possibility to live in supported housing. Samaria organization is working also in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.

UFF is an charity organization which works in Finland. Their mission is to support development and thereby improving people living condition in developing countries. Organizations recycling activities serve Finland's environment. UFF Association of assistance is based on a clothes recycling. The clothes sell in retail sale and the profit goes environmental services in Finland and financed development projects in South Africa and India. Every year, about one million Finns support the UFF's activities.
