Team Tornado video from the time in Estonia

Case studies

Case 1

Jessica (20) is an exchange student from Cuba. Last year she started her IT studies in Tallinn Technical University, Estonia. Back home Jessica was an extremely active young lady. Her hobbies were singing, football and charity projects. To find new friends in Estonia, Jessica decided to join a local football club. From the very beginning everybody stared at her because of her exotic appearance. Always sunny Jessica decided not to pay attention to the strange behaviour of the team mates. Unfortunately things became worse. The football team mates started to insult Jessica by using rude vocabulary, and they started to ignore her at training. Jessica is very unhappy and does not know what to do.

  • What should Jessica and others do to be accepted to the team?

Case 2

Riina and Georg’s daughter Mari is studying abroad. Mari was born when her parents were not in the first youth. They are retired by now and have always been very conservative. The farthest trips they have ever made were to Latvia. They talk to Mari approximately once a month on phone and are happy about their daughter as it seems she likes studying there and is satisfied with her life. They never ask extra questions. But Mari has fallen in love with a Japanese guy. They have known each other for two years by now and have decided to come to Estonia together to see Mari’s parents. Unfortunately, Mari does not know how to present this news to her parents because she is absolutely convinced it will be very difficult for them to accept her Japanese boyfriend. Therefore she has put it off to tell her parents that there are two of them coming.

  • What are Mari’s opportunities to solve the problem?

Case 3

Adanya is a five-year-old girl living in Estonia with her parents. She is really black and very different from Estonian kids. Her father’s name is Ola and her mother is called Folami. They are Nigerians. Her father has got a job here in Estonia. But her mother is still unemployed. Adanya has been to an Estonian kindergarten for nine months by now. She understands quite a lot what her playmates tell her in Estonian and she can even speak Estonian a little. She is a friendly girl and gets on well with her playmates and in the kindergarten everybody wants to play with her. She was very happy until the day she heard everybody discussing a birthday party they had taken part in. The first time she did not realise she had been the only one who had not been invited. From there on she heard about the fascinating birthday parties in fancy places almost every month. She became sad and did not want to play with the children. Finally kindergarten teachers found her crying alone in her bed because of that.
  • How could people around Adanya help her?

The second day. Team Tornado

Today we, Team Tornado, we were hiking somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Estonia :)
We saw a lot of things during this trip, a lot of trees, green and white lakes and went up a big tower which is the highest point of North-Estonia. Then we went to a fish farm that also has a big, fluffy seal :)
Later on we went to visit an Accommodation Centre for Asylum Seekers in a forest near the Jaama village. There we got a lot of information about people searching for asylums.
Then we went to the AQVA spa and had a lot of fun there. We were swimming, talking, sauning, sliding, laughing :) Some people missed that and now they have small depression and we are not joking now :( (Anastasiia and Sigmar (c))
We can't  wait for tomorrow!!! xD Case studies and especially bowling and pizzaaaaaaa. This night everybody should practice their singing O_o
See you!

Essay from Latvia

Throwing away prejudices and racism

Racism has existed all through the history. It can be defined as hatred of one person to another or the belief that the other person is worse just because of his skin colour, different language, unusual customs, different place of birth or any other factor. This has caused wars and slavery, riots and misunderstandings. Innocent people have suffered just because they are different and someone else cannot accept this difference. Nowadays many people are getting more and more tolerant but still there are a plenty of those who feel superior and want to rule others. What can we do to stop it? This is a really complicated question.

On the one hand, racism and prejudice both are similar and exist in modern society on a large scale. Historically Western people have been really unwelcoming to non-Western residents. The most notorious example was enslavement of Africans in the New World. It was achieved due to the racist belief that black Africans possessed less human qualities than white Europeans. And this kind of prejudice is still there. We can read about it in the news every day. No one knows the solution for this problem, but each of us can start with oneself: be polite to all people, respect everyone and understand that the earth is home for everyone and all of us. We all have equal rights and laws, we all want to live good life and that is why we have to care about one another every day.

On the other hand, there are governments and deputies who pass laws and create regulations. If they really wanted, they could have changed the world and we might be living not even knowing what racism or prejudice is. Unfortunately, it is not beneficial to solve this problem. Many African civilizations are unable to correspond to the technological advances of Europe. And money rules the world, not hard work or charity or honest people. Therefore sometimes it is hard to think about possible solutions as there are none. One can only rely on oneself and think of one’s individual attitude to those sensitive topics. We can get more educated and think globally not locally. Then there will be some hope for a better future.

What can we do to fight racism? First, we need to understand that we are all the same and can’t be distinguished. We are all one, big family. We were born equal and we have equal rights. If someone thinks differently, then we can say – there is always an opportunity to change your habits and opinions. We are interested in other cultures, so I can tell about it to other people and the process of kindness will start. If we became kind and tolerant, there would be no need for wars and fights.
