Case studies
Case 1
Jessica (20) is an exchange student from Cuba. Last year she started her IT
studies in Tallinn Technical University, Estonia. Back home Jessica was an
extremely active young lady. Her hobbies were singing, football and charity
projects. To find new friends in Estonia, Jessica decided to join a local
football club. From the very beginning everybody stared at her because of her
exotic appearance. Always sunny Jessica decided not to pay attention to the
strange behaviour of the team mates. Unfortunately things became worse. The
football team mates started to insult Jessica by using rude vocabulary, and
they started to ignore her at training. Jessica is very unhappy and does not
know what to do.
- What should Jessica and others do to be accepted to the team?

Case 2
Riina
and Georg’s daughter Mari is studying abroad. Mari was born when her parents
were not in the first youth. They are retired by now and have always been very
conservative. The farthest trips they have ever made were to Latvia. They talk
to Mari approximately once a month on phone and are happy about their daughter
as it seems she likes studying there and is satisfied with her life. They never
ask extra questions. But Mari has fallen in love with a Japanese guy. They have
known each other for two years by now and have decided to come to Estonia
together to see Mari’s parents. Unfortunately, Mari does not know how to
present this news to her parents because she is absolutely convinced it will be
very difficult for them to accept her Japanese boyfriend. Therefore she has put
it off to tell her parents that there are two of them coming.
- What are Mari’s opportunities to solve the problem?

Adanya
is a five-year-old girl living in Estonia with her parents. She is really black
and very different from Estonian kids. Her father’s name is Ola and her mother
is called Folami. They are Nigerians. Her father has got a job here in Estonia.
But her mother is still unemployed. Adanya has been to an Estonian kindergarten
for nine months by now. She understands quite a lot what her playmates tell her
in Estonian and she can even speak Estonian a little. She is a friendly girl
and gets on well with her playmates and in the kindergarten everybody wants to
play with her. She was very happy until the day she heard everybody discussing
a birthday party they had taken part in. The first time she did not realise she
had been the only one who had not been invited. From there on she heard about
the fascinating birthday parties in fancy places almost every month. She became
sad and did not want to play with the children. Finally kindergarten teachers found
her crying alone in her bed because of that.
- How could people around Adanya help her?

The second day. Team Tornado
Today we, Team Tornado, we were hiking somewhere in the middle of nowhere in Estonia :)
We saw a lot of things during this trip, a lot of trees, green and white lakes and went up a big tower which is the highest point of North-Estonia. Then we went to a fish farm that also has a big, fluffy seal :)
Later on we went to visit an Accommodation Centre for Asylum Seekers in a forest near the Jaama village. There we got a lot of information about people searching for asylums.
Then we went to the AQVA spa and had a lot of fun there. We were swimming, talking, sauning, sliding, laughing :) Some people missed that and now they have small depression and we are not joking now :( (Anastasiia and Sigmar (c))
We can't wait for tomorrow!!! xD Case studies and especially bowling and pizzaaaaaaa. This night everybody should practice their singing O_o
See you!

Essay from Estonia
Throwing Away Prejudices of Racism
Racism is discrimination of other people because of their skin colour, language, customs, place of birth or any other factor that supposedly reveals the origin of the person. The main reason why people have prejudices is that they do not have experience, they are not familiar with people who are different from the mainstream and they believe that other people behave wrong from what they presume.
Due to Estonian recent history, some people from the older generation have a negative attitude towards Russians. However, most people accept that nation. This is also the background reason why we are careful about immigration and problems that it may accompany. Nevertheless, we can say that Estonians are not very racist, especially young and educated Estonians, who understand that new and different is not always bad. Why? Because we have had opportunities to study with students from other countries, they study in Estonia, and some of our young people go abroad as exchange students. And thanks to Erasmus we can go and do our training abroad, it is becoming more and more popular. I can say that my friends and the people I know are not racists. Many of them have been exchange students or have experience in working in other countries. Nowadays it seems to be popular to have a friend from another race or culture.
The main reason why prejudices of racism decrease is globalisation that causes cultural integration and increases tolerance. Equally, movies have important role in the process. Who would not love Morgan Freeman or Jackie Chan?
In conclusion we can say that prejudices of races are disappearing. There are many reasons, such as globalisation, educational exchange and entertainment media. I can claim that being a racist is not popular in Estonia and educated people know other cultures and accept them.

Day 2 for team Fantatastic
Hi again :)
Today we did a lot of charity work. We went to 2 places: one of them was charity shop Otrā Elpa - it was about doing basic work for clothes shop but there was main difference that all the clothes were donated by people. We just separated them by the one's worth selling and the one's who they were going to give to others in need.
This is us in work |
Also we went to Samaritans Group flat, where we helped with the renovation. We also learned who live in that flat, and how they learn to live by themselfes. We helped with wallpaper and in the kitchen we peeled off some tape from the walls after repainting (after group North Wolf painted them).
It was "hard" work |
Good work is team work |
Melyna Augu Damen
We had a lot fun today :)
First we worked on
our presentation. At the beginning we had 4 girls but we founded relay nice
guys to help us out and they also balanced our team.
After preparing our case study we
went to a charity shop called “ Otra Elpa”.
We had several activities - sorting donations and pricing the products.
We are hoping that tomorrow will be even greater day :)

ESSAY FROM ESTONIA
Charity for our feelings of
well being
Charity has always been there. The majority of people
have helped someone out at least once in a lifetime. Each new generation is
given more options and chances to change the world for the better. The question
is: “Are we using all the chances that have been given to us or are we just
doing the least? “One of the meaning of happiness lies within charity. Only the
strong at mind and kind at heart can support the ones in need.
If we take a look at Estonian charity, we can see that
it has transformed a lot in years of independence. Nowadays we can see a vast
variety of charities, there are long term charities and just campaigns. Long
term charities are the ones that have the most effect on those peoples’ lives
who are not well off. One that gives constant support is called “Toidupank“(Food
Bank). It supports individuals and families that cannot manage on their own.
Other organisations that truly have an effect on the life of our people are
“Lastefond“(Children’s’ Foundation), “Naerata Ometi MTÜ“(Keep Smiling), and
“Heategevusfond Dharma“(Charity Foundation Dhrama). All of them have a positive
effect on peoples’ lives.
One of Estonian famous seasonal campaigns is called “Jõulutunnel” (Christmas Tunnel). It is held once a year but still has effect on peoples’ minds, hearts and overall wellbeing.
One of Estonian famous seasonal campaigns is called “Jõulutunnel” (Christmas Tunnel). It is held once a year but still has effect on peoples’ minds, hearts and overall wellbeing.
Secondly, let us talk about our college and charity. Last
May our College Student Council created an event for orphanage children and the
task was to find the sponsors for the event. Last Christmas there was a project
where books and toys were collected for donation to large families. In the end
of the last year, there was a bakery sale and every team could decide the
charity they donated the profits to.
Finally, the charity projects our team members have
participated in. Riina, as a member of the College Student Council, was
responsible for finding sponsors for the orphanage project. Raigo has never had
enough money to make frequent donations, but he does have time. For example,
last year, when he did not get accepted into the college, he started
volunteering in a local shelter for children. It was the first time in his life
that he felt that his contribution of time actually mattered. Martin
participated in a popular charity project called Ice-Bucket Challenge.
In conclusion we can say that charity is all around
us. To make people feel better you sometimes just need time and good will.
