Charity in Schools
We think that charity in school is very important to build up interest among young people in those areas. Here in Iceland students are very active at being pioneer to there own charity work and participate in them. In many schools there are special charity committees or even special courses that arrange all kind of events and gather money for others in need. Students often do this charity work in creative ways and all the students get together to help make the most of it or even have competition between classes who raises the most.
For an example of an unusual ways to raise money, student in Reykjavík started a kissing both in their school and raised 1.2 million isk. to build a school in Kenya and just now last month a student got dressed up as tinkywinky and walked between two towns. Schools are very active in making many events where students collect pledge to colour their hair, shave there legs and heads, get a tattoo, run between cities or even get famous people in Iceland to compete against the students in soccer and sell tickets to the game and then give the money they raise to charity.
Students have also done things that may not raise money but they are done to make people safe and happy. Students have sometimes offered people on the streets and in the malls free hugs around christmas to make everybody feel loved on that time of the year. They also encourage people to donate blood and to become a volunteer and also offer a First Aid course that might help save someone's life in the future.
To look at the whole picture, we think that having a charity work in our schools and making it a part of our social lives is very important. We are building up the interest and the foundation that young people need because later on these will be the people who keep up the entire community and charity work that goes on in the country and the more we inspire young minds to work in these areas, the more we can help others in need and build up a better community for everyone.
